The musical instrument the ukulele was first popularized in the continental United States during the Panama Pacific International Exposition, held in 1915 from the spring to the fall in San Francisco. The Hawaiian Pavilion at the exposition included a guitar and ukulele ensemble. This song was one of a number written by Tin Pan Alley songwriters in response to the sudden interest in this instrument.
