A final chapter looks at how school policy can combat racism and build on these positive elements. This book should be of interest to primary teachers and students of race at all levels, educational management and professionals in education. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. The crisis of black youth is all set to become the most urgently pressing social problem of the 1980's. Young black people are disproportionately hit by growing unemployment; they are over-represented in crime statistics and they continually achieve little of significance at school. Most importantly, they show no particular desire to improve their own conditions. Instead, they have effected a detachment from the society they call Babylon. It is a detachment made apparent in the most vivid way by members of the Rastafarian movement, but deeply felt by thousands of other black youths. Why? This is the question the authors set out to answer when they began to put together this book. Their own research indicated to them that a turning point was imminenet and, in the most forthright and provocative way, they present their view and reasons for it in the book's main chapter, appropriately called 'Black Youth in Crisis'. In an effort to throw light on the often obscure world of black youth, the authors have called upon the forewmost authorities in this particular area, people who have wrung their experience out of research or out of being black themselves.
