Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Formed on the South Side of Chicago in 1968 at the height of the civil rights, Black power, and Black arts movements, the AFRICOBRA collective created a new artistic visual language rooted in the culture of Chicago's Black neighborhoods. The collective's aesthetics, especially the use of vibrant color, capture the rhythmic dynamism of Black culture and social life. In AFRICOBRA, painter, photographer, and collective cofounder Wadsworth A. Jarrell tells the definitive story of the group's creation, history, and artistic and political principles. From accounts of the painting of the groundbreaking Wall of Respect mural and conversations among group members to documentation of AFRICOBRA's exhibits in Chicago, New York, and Boston, Jarrell outlines how the collective challenged white conceptions of art by developing an artistic philosophy and approach wholly divested of Western practices. Featuring nearly one hundred color images of artworks, exhibition ephemera, and photographs, this book is at once a sourcebook history of AFRICOBRA and the story of visionary artists who rejected the white art establishment in order to create uplifting art for all Black people. Painter, photographer, and cofounder of AFRICOBRA Wadsworth A. Jarrell tells the definitive history of the group's creation, history, and artistic and political principles and the ways it captured the rhythmic dynamism of black culture and social life to create uplifting art for all black people. Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. Two calendars. Introduction by Michael Thelwell, a professor of African-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts. Both measuring 13" x 12". Glossy illustrated wrappers stapled at the topedge and with punch holes for displaying, as issued. Some edge creasing and corner bumping to both; one with additional splash marks, overall very good. Each month features an illustration of a different story from the Bible (Adam and Eve, Sermon on the Mount, King Solomon, etc.) by various artists: Akili Ron Anderson, Michael Borders, Louis Delsarte, Valerie Maynard, Paul Goodnight, Wadsworth Jarrell, Jon Onye Lockard, and Pheoris West, among others. The calendars are internally the same except for one image by artist James Phillips (The Miracle of the Fishes) that has been replace in the 1994 edition by an image of Christ by Allan Rohan Crite. A surprisingly uncommon pair of calendar, with no copies in *OCLC* or online.
