"The rules and exercises of Holy living.and holy dying" London - "Printed by Miles Flesher for Richard Royston, Book seller to his most sacred Majesty" -Jeremy Taylor 1613-1667 -Fine Contemporary Black morocco binding with gold tooling and edges. -1682 -Complete with 3 engraved title pages and 2 double page engravings: [3 blanks], [20], 336, [20], 260, [4], [3 blanks] We sometimes forget how important religion was in people's daily lives in the 17th century. Daily prayer was important and people were also acutely aware of their mortality. This work was one of the most important devotional Anglican prayer books of the early modern era. First published after the English civil war (c1645), it would run through multiple editions. The book discussed how to live through daily prayer, work and virtue, and how to prepare for death and the judgement day. This is a particularly fine copy - red ruled, gilt edge, and bound in fine gold tooled contemporary black calf. Some wear to upper spine but generally excellent. Internally clean with only a few marks here and there. The original owner was a Mary Bramston (signature) and it was later owned by the Barons Osborn in Bedfordshire (Bookplate).…

In den WarenkorbThe earliest translation to English of the Jewish Prayer-book. This comprehensive, and occasionally rather critical, study of Jewish life and practices is dominated by the first English translation of any part of the Siddur, the definitive Jewish prayer-book. Translated by Abraham Mears (under the pseudonym of Gamaleil Ben Pedahzur, according to Roth), an apostate member of the English Ashkenazi community, it was intended as an exposition of Judaism rather than a service book, but in providing phonetic translations of the Hebrew title of each prayer Mears explicitly promotes its use 'to Beginners in the Hebrew Tongue' and 'all Persons that resort to the Synagogues'. The transliterated Hebrew title for each prayer is found in the margins, enabling the curious non-Hebrew reading Christian to attend and follow a synagogue service. The transliteration of the Hebrew characters provides a clue as to how Hebrew was pronounced in the eighteenth-century Ashkenazi community of London. The book was not intended for liturgical use, but rather for scholarly readership, so it is not in effect a prayer-book. It reflects the growing interest in Judaism on the part of non-Jewish Englishmen of the eighteenth century. First edition, 8vo (20.5 x 13 cm); xiv, 96; 291, [7] pp.; modern blue cloth boards; first and last leaf restored with some marginal loss of text; edges stained, corners rubbed. In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. Large 4to, pp. [2 (blank)], [14], 386, [2 (colophon, blank)], with loosely inserted Supplement showing Variants in the Prayer Book of the American Church (pp. viii, uncut); printed in red and black throughout with numerous historiated woodcut borders and initials; small stain to lower margin of first leaves, otherwise clean throughout; in the publisher's gilt purple cloth, arms of Canterbury, Westminster and London blocked in gilt and colour to upper board, top-edge gilt, others uncut, glazed blue endpapers embossed with lions rampant; spine very slightly sunned, but an excellent copy.Authorised American edition of the Essex House Press Book of Common Prayer, published in celebration of the accession of Edward VII. The title is framed within scenes of London and Westminster and faced by a woodcut of Edward VII enthroned on the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey, surrounded by portraits his six predecessors of the same name (with Edward IV standing in front of Caxton's press, one of the notable developments of his reign). The following pages are littered with woodcuts and initials, including not only Biblical scenes but also portraits of British monarchs, a procession of notable figures in English history (from St Alban to the nineteenth century), and a group of figures consulting books in a chained library. The Prayer Book of Edward VII, designed by C.R. Ashbee of the Essex House Press, was first printed in England and here reprinted despite its at-times heavily Anglocentric illustrations in the United States. A loosely inserted Supplement showing Variants from the Prayer Book of the Church of England in the Prayer Book of the American Church includes a large initial with a portrait of Theodore Roosev elt. In den Warenkorb16 pp. 8vo. 16 pp. 8vo. An adaptation of Reasons for which the Service Booke, Urged upon Scotland Ought to bee Refused (1638), a work published in response to the controversial introduction of the Book of Common Prayer in Scotland. Charles I commissioned the Scotch version and made it mandatory in an attempt to standardize the patchwork Church of Scotland and bring it in line with the monarch-friendly Church of England - it was so poorly received that it led to riots, the emergence of the Scotch Covenanter movement, the Bishops' Wars, and ultimately Charles's own execution. This title appeared c.1714 and in 1726 alongside further controversies in the Church of Scotland over conformity and the use of the Book of Common Prayer. Its publication also coincides with the 1713 and 1723 London printings of A Letter to the People of Scotland in Order to Remove Their Prejudice to the Book of Common Prayer. William R. Whittingham (1805-1879) graduated the General Theological Seminary in 1825 and was named librarian of the newly founded school. He later accepted a position on the faculty in 1836. Whittingham was consecrated the fourth Bishop of Maryland in 1840 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Whittingham's important theological library became the core of the Maryland Diocese library, which was in turn transferred to the General Theological Seminary. Excepting this copy, OCLC locates 4 copies, 1 outside the United Kingdom (Morgan Library). ESTC N471916 Disbound, closely trimmed. Leaves separated and lightly edgeworn, some toning and light soiling, perforated stamps to first and final leaves. Housed in red cloth slipcase and wrapper. Provenance: William R. Whittingham (ink initials to head of first page); Maryland Diocesan Library; General Theological Seminary (bookplates and inkstamp to verso of first leaf).…

In den WarenkorbN.p., but France (probably Paris) and dated on the title M.DCC.XLII (1742). 8vo (175 x 115mm). Paginated recto and verso to 261pp. Title page with hand-drawn heraldic device (of the scribe?): unidentified joined arms of checky and wavy, all surmounted by crown. French text comprises chronologically-arranged devotions following the books of the Bible(Genesis to Apocalypse). Each prayer is titled with its biblical book and cited with chapter and verse numbers at the end. Written in a consistent hand, in brown ink in both calligraphic majuscule and italic letters, and neatly laid out within ruled borders. 19th-centurycalf gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled edges; (edges lightly browned, corners lightly bumped, otherwise very good copy of this seemingly unique manuscript by an unknown compiler). A later printed book sharing this title is attributed to the French poet and moralist Pierre-Laurent Bérenger (17491842), known as the "Troubadour of Provence." Bérenger's collection publishes a close textual variant of this manuscript, copying many of the prayersoutright, and was first printed in Paris by P. G. Simon in 1767. According to the title, the 1767 18mo edition also contained the daily and nightly prayers for families. Bérenger's Recueil de toutes les prieres was reprinted again with Simon in 1782, including the prayers for the Divine Office, and again in 1803 in Lyon with the slightly different title, "Recueil de prières, contenant toutes celles qui se trouvent dans l'Ecriture sainte" ("Collection of prayers, containing all those found in the Holy Scriptures"). Dated 1742, this manuscript book precedes the work of Bérenger by several years and it is unlikely that he had any direct connection to its original composition. It is more likely that manuscript copies of this text were in circulation and available to Bérenger (and his circle) when he took up the later work of publishing it. The layout of the manuscript's title page with probably a fictitious heraldic "printer's mark" and date written in roman numerals suggests this copy was being prepared for print and was possibly abandoned for some years. Bérenger's preface in the 1782edition, gives some clues to his intent, but does not mention the original source material. It reads, translated, "There can be no more pleasing prayers to God, and therefore more useful to the faithful, than those which his Holy Spirit himself has dictated; this Book contains all of them, with the exception of the Psalms, which we have not thought fit to add to it, so as not to overgrow the volume bringing together, if you will, all the prayers which Holy Scripturefurnishes, the most suitable for every circumstance, the different dispositions of the souls, and the needs of each one in particular." This is a unique manuscript book precursor on the prayers found in Scripture, composed in French and later disseminated in print - we could not locate another manuscript copy .…
